Dr Hugh Mantle OBE

British athletes picked up more medals in the 2004 Athens Olympics than they had in any Games since the Second World War. Hugh was part of the team behind the scenes that helped to make the difference on the track.

In the run-up to the Games, he guided a redefinition of the coach’s role and that of the coaches’ managers, set up feedback mechanisms so that the coaches could learn how well they were doing, and grew a climate of abiding trust.

He’s also helped a broadcasting company to recognise and deal with its damaging habits of internal communication, breaking down turf-protecting behaviour, arranging job swaps to improve understanding, and helping executives to let go of destructive one-upmanship.

Among his clients: Bourne Leisure, a hotel and holidays group; DSM, a Dutch pharmaceutical and mining company; the government’s Immigration and Naturalisation Department; and the Japanese car-maker Honda
