KBR Effective Leadership Programme

"The impact of the effective leadership programme has exceeded our expectations. Its helping our key managers deliver at a critical time."

Brian Callaghan,
Global HRD Manager, KBR
Kellogg Brown and Root (KBR) is a major construction and engineering services company responsible for activities as diverse as construction of the Alice Springs to Darwin railway in Australia, maintaining oilfield platforms in the Gulf of Mexico, and building major highways in Greece. As part of a global management development programme, Performance1 is developing and delivering a new senior leadership development process. The brief was tough; to develop a robust programme that integrates 360 feedback from the Emotional Competence Inventory (ECI), individual coaching, development workshops and work assignments to help senior managers deliver their projects more effectively. And by the way, these people might just as easily be working in Azerbaijan or Adelaide, Texas or Turkey. Through close collaboration with KBR’s own HR development teams in different regions, the design of the programme was carefully structured so that it could either transcend or adapt to local differences. So far pilot programmes have been successfully received in the UK, the US and Australia, with participants from as far afield as Mexico, Scotland, Singapore, and Australia. A regular programme is now being delivered in Houston and in Leatherhead (UK), where it’s serving to reinforce a number of change initiatives that will help KBR re-position itself in a tough sector.
Now that implementation is starting, the same principles can be observed to co-create the management of change – so that people can feel involved and not done-to. It is anticipated that whole-system events – even involving hundreds of people - will be held at key moments during the change process – and interspersed with smaller workshops. All of these events again to be collaboratively designed and led – and each based upon the real-time working of issues.
