GB Canoe Slalom Olympic Performance Programme

"Canoeing in the UK is a successful Olympic Sport with our athletes winning 5 medals at the Sydney and Athens Olympic Games. The World of High Performance Sport is fast moving and the process of change is continuous as we seek the competitive edge on the opposition. The support given to our athletes and coaches by Hugh Mantle and William Winstone is World Class in every respect as we work together to our mutual goals for medal success in Beijing"

Delivering Excellence in Canoe Slalom

Amidst the excitement of the extra funding provided for Olympic sports leading up to 2012, lies the hard reality that our teams and athletes have to deliver medals along the way in order to sustain this investment. The context in Canoe Slalom is that whilst athletes are part of the same team for training and representing GB, they also compete against each other, both for World Championship success, and for the single space that is available to actually go to the Olympics in each class. A healthy team environment is essential to foster a spirit of mutually supportive excellence, as opposed to destructive suspicion.

Hugh Mantle and William Winstone’s brief is to ensure that team management, coaches and individual athletes are mentally tough enough, and aligned to the goal of producing medals when it matters. In the past year this has been achieved by a combination of individual coaching and group events. As a part of this overall programme, “Embark to Beijing” provided a platform for the push from World championship medal success in 2006 to Olympic medals in 2008.

Building on the real progress and successes of the past year, reinforcing the ‘no stone unturned’ mindset; at its heart was the challenge to communicate honestly, and to facilitate the powerful and at times difficult conversations that high performing teams face full on. Embark to Beijing was highly successful in reinforcing motivation and cohesion in this team. This also demonstrates P1’s approach to teambuilding: a combination of ongoing involvement, personal coaching, and specific teambuilding events that provides sustainable excellence and success.
