Pilot Gig Rowing - Charlestown Rowing Club

On Wednesday William helped Charlestown Rowing Club sharpen their performance edge ahead of the pilot gig rowing world championships in May. The initial session in February showed the crews techniques for staying positive during every training session. This second session helped the crews develop their race plans and identify key focus points to deliver powerful and simple concentration under pressure.

The Ladies A crew took me out on a training session as they practiced their starts. As well as giving a feel for the sport and their challenges, it gave an insight into the origins of this ancient sport. He was sitting in the pilot's seat whose original occupant was responsible for guiding ships to safety. As far back as the 1790's gigs would race each other to deliver their pilot to the trading ships, and guarantee income for their communities.
